Beauty and the Beast (Czech: Panna a netvor) is a Czech horror fairy tale film directed by Slovak film director Juraj Herz in 1978. The film is a re-telling of the classic tale Beauty and the Beast. Herz made the innovative decision to depict the beast as a bird-like creature. It has a gothic atmosphere and setting, and a pervasive atmosphere of dread.
For his direction, Herz received the Medalla Sitges en Oro de Ley at the Sitges Film Festival in 1979.
Synopsis
Julie is a bankrupt merchant's daughter who, as the only one of the three daughters, chooses to save her father's life. She goes to the Haunted Wood's Castle where she meets Netvor. Netvor has no qualms about killing Julie, but her beauty prevents him from doing so. Although Julie is forbidden to look at him, she starts to love him and the love rescues him from his curse.
