The species were named by Gotthold Steiner in 1926 and both the genus and the species names are of Greek origin with the name Bathyechiniscus (Βαθυεχίνισκος) meaning "(the) deep (kind of) Echiniscus (that are founded deep in the oceans)" and tetronyx (τετρονυξ).

The species are founded in the Atlantic and the southern part up to Antarctica including an area that is sometimes called the Southern Ocean (not as the Antarctic Ocean).[1]
