Bandwidth is a Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) company for enterprises.  Bandwidth’s solutions include a suite of software application programming interfaces (or APIs) for voice and messaging utilizing the company's own all-IP voice network. Businesses use Bandwidth's APIs to add calling and texting functionality to software, applications, and internet-connected devices. Bandwidth’s nationwide all-IP voice network is redundant and monitored by its 24x7 network operations center (NOC).

History

Formed in 1999, Bandwidth began in co-founder David Morken's Park City, Utah home. His goal was to form a telecommunications procurement company that focused on three key points of quality: selection, savings, and service. The company's rapid growth led Bandwidth to relocate to North Carolina where it currently operates from the Centennial Campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. As of December 31, 2017, Bandwidth maintains a workforce of 378 employees.[4] Bandwidth reported Q2 2018 revenue of $48.3 million.

In November 2017, the company had an initial public offering on the NASDAQ.[5] The public offering launched at $20 per share, with 4 million Class A common stock shares made available. As of August 2018, Bandwidth stock was trading at more than $40 per share.

Products & Services

Bandwidth’s CPaaS solutions operate across four major areas of communications: voice, messaging, phone numbers, and 9-1-1 access.

Voice

Bandwidth powers voice connections through APIs that allow for embedding of call functionality directly into software and applications. To power voice calls, Bandwidth allows connections via its APIs, SIP, or directly into Bandwidth’s network. Additionally, working with partner carriers, Bandwidth offers nationwide toll-free voice service, acting as a Responsible Organization (RespOrg) for businesses that need their toll-free voice services managed.

Messaging

Using APIs, businesses can embed SMS, MMS, Application-to-Person (A2P), and Group Messaging directly into their applications. Messaging services are powered by Bandwidth’s underlying network.

9-1-1 Access

Bandwidth’s 9-1-1 solutions allow businesses focused on safety and security to embed access to emergency services directly into their software or service. Utilizing E9-1-1, Bandwidth supports caller location information for Public Safety Answers Points (PSAP), providing caller location information as a part of connecting the call. Additionally, Bandwidth offers Dynamic Location Routing for VoIP to help route emergency services to the correct location, particularly on business and college campuses.

Phone Numbers

Bandwidth provides businesses access to phone numbers, including toll-free numbers. Businesses can manage these virtual numbers through Bandwidth’s own phone number dashboard, or use APIs to embed number ordering, porting, and management into their own dashboard.

Partnership

In July 2011, Bandwidth Inc. started working with Alabama's 911 centers to allow people to send text messages, pictures and videos to 911 in 2013.[1]

Bandwidth Inc. was a sponsor of the FreePBX Project,[2][3][4] until its acquisition by Schmooze Com Inc in early 2013.[5]

Bandwidth Inc. also manages the assignment of telephone numbers for Google Voice— a carrier search on a Google Voice number, for example, will indicate that the carrier's identity is Bandwidth Inc.
