The Indonesia Logistics Bureau (Indonesian: Badan Urusan Logistik/BULOG) is a government-owned company in Indonesia which deals with food distribution and price control.

History

Bulog was setup in 10 May 1967 following Suharto's rise into power. Its initial purpose was to secure the food supply in order to stabilize the new government following the chaos that followed Sukarno's fall, with inflation reaching 650 percent in 1966.[1][2] Later, its authorities expanded to price stabilization in 1969 with the company's rice stocks acting as a buffer stock and controlled export or import of rice to pressure the market into stable prices. It was later assigned to multiple food commodities in 1987.[3] Initially, the distribution of rice covered mainly government servants, with the group (including military personnel) receiving a 63% share of the 1.13 million tons of rice distributed by Bulog in 1970. However, market distribution grew, with 1.86 out of 2.66 million tons of rice distributed in 1980 going to open market operations.[4]

Following the Asian financial crisis and a Letter of Intent with the IMF, Bulog's authority was reduced to a smaller basket of commodities.[1]
