Summary

The field was down to seven competitors by 5.40m, Mike Tully and Pierre Quinon hadn't taken a jump. They both came in at 5.45m, Tully clearing on his first attempt and Quinon his second (advantage Tully). Felix Böhni and Doug Lytle went out at 5.50m, Kimmo Pallonen went out at 5.55m, yet Thierry Vigneron, Earl Bell and Tully still had clean rounds going in scattered jumping, strategically passing heights. At 5.60m, Vigneron and Bell remained clean while Tully and Quinon passed. Vigneron and Bell passed 5.65m while Tully, then Quinon took only their third attempts of the competition. Both missed. When Tully missed his second, Quinon passed as he felt he could gain no advantage by clearing. Tully made his third to take the lead. At 5.70m, Tully passed while Quinon cleared on his first attempt to take the lead. Vigneron and Bell ended their perfect day, neither could clear 5.70m and they ended up in a tie for the bronze medal. Tully passed again at 5.75m, while Quinon again cleared it. Tully's only hope for gold was to jump 5.80m before Quinon, but neither could clear it.
