Assam-type house

Assam-type houses are found in the Northeast Indian state of Assam and nearby areas. They are generally single-story houses, but sometimes double-story varieties can be found. The houses are built to be earthquake proof. The houses are made from different materials, ranging from wood and bamboo to steel and concrete.[1][2][3]

History

Before the arrival of the British in India, royal families in Assam lived in expensive, elaborately constructed houses, while the locals survived in huts made from mud-plastered bamboo walls and thatched roofs. The Assam type houses are a result of the arrival of the British in India. They assessed the environment and designed and constructed the houses that are now known as Assam-type houses.[3]
