Andreas Schieder (born 16 April 1969) is an Austrian politician who served as parliamentary leader of the Social Democratic Party in the National Council. He was also state secretary in the Ministry of Finance from 2008 to 2013.
Education
Schieder attended primary school in Hütteldorf, in the western suburbs of Vienna, the Goethe-Gymasium in Astgasse, and the Gymnasium Kundmanngasse. He graduated from the University of Vienna as Magister in Volkswirtschaft. Subsequently, he started work in the economic policy department of the Austrian Chamber of Labour.
Political career
Politicized through the debates about the war history of Kurt Waldheim, Schieder joined the Young Socialists. He served as vice president of the International Union of Socialist Youth from 1994 to 1997, from 1997 to 1999 as President of the Young European Socialists, as district councilor of Penzing and as a member of the Wiener Landtag und Gemeinderat. Since 2002 Schieder chairs the SPÖ Penzing, as successor of his father Peter Schieder. And since 2005 he also is a member of the party-governance of the SPÖ Vienna. On 30 October 2006 Schieder was appointed member to the national council and speaker of his party in foreign politics. Since 10 January 2007 he also serves as international secretary of the SPÖ federal organisations.
On 1 July 2008 he succeeded state secretary in the federal chancellery Heidrun Silhavy. As state secretary he was responsible for the public service. After the First Faymann government was appointed in 2. Dezember 2008, he also became state secretary in the Ministry of Finance.
On 28 October 2013 Schieder was elected parliamentary leader of the SPÖ in the National Council by the parliamentary club of the party. He succeeded Josef Cap who hold this position for 12 years.
Schieder was unanimously elected chairman of the Austrian Friends of Nature in May 2014. In February 2016 he was appointed speaker of the club members of the social democrats of the eu member states. Since June 2016 Schieder is one of the deputy chairmen of the Social Democratic Party of Austria.
Personal life
Andreas Schieder has one son with SPÖ-politician Sonja Wehsely. In his private life schieder is involved as functionary at the SK Rapid Wien and as President of the FV Austria XIII. He is inspired hiker, health athlete, and long-term member of the Austrian Friends of Nature.
