Abul Hasanat Abdullah (10 December 1944) is a Bangladesh Awami League politician and a member of Parliament.[1]

Early life

Abdullah was born on 10 December 1944.[2] has studied up to Secondary School Certificate (grade 10).[3]

Career

Abdullah was elected Upazila Chairman in Barisal in 1973.[4] In 1975 his father, Abdur Rab Serniabat, was killed in the 15 August 1975 Bangladesh Coup D'etat. He and his family members fled Bangladesh. The new Government of Bangladesh declared his land vested property and took over them. In 2001, the land was returned to him. Gournadi Pourasabha Bangladesh Nationalist Party president Hannan Sharif announced the 25 decimals of the property belonged to Roads and Highways Department according to the records of the Land Revenue Department. Sharif started building the local office of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party office with the permission of Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mahfuzur Rahman.[5] He was elected to Parliament from Barisal-1 in 1991 and 1996.[6][3] On 24 January 1998 he visited the site where MV Baleshwar sank killing 150 people.[7] On 26 January 2000 he was appointed member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Ministry.[8] He was chief whip of parliament in the Awami league government from 1996 to 2001. He is chairman of Abdul Hakim High School in Rangabali Upazila, Patuakhali.[9] In 2002, during Operation Clean Heart his house in Barisal City was raided by security personal led by Major Akbor and Major Shariar. The police recovered two guns, bullets, 613 thousand in cash, gold ornaments, and 355 blank Freedom Fighter certificate.[10]

On 25 December 2006 Abdullah apologized for any mistake he made during his term as Member of Parliament and said he would explain why he did not visit his constituency during the government of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He was the General Secretary of Barisal District unit of Bangladesh Awami League. According to Bdnews24.com he faced criticism for the actions of his son and son-in-law during his term as Member of Parliament.[11] On 12 November 2007, his properties from his house in 25, Kalabagan Lake Circus Road in Dhanmondi were attached to Dhanmondi Police Station on court orders. His wife, Shahanara Abdullah, was forced to sleep on the floor as the bed was taken away as well.[12] In 2 and 24 April 2008, two cases were filed against him over the raid of his house in 2002 during Operation Clean Heart. In 2008, he was nominated by Bangladesh Awami League in Barisal-1 and Barisal-2. His nomination was opposed by local activists of Bangladesh Awami League, who wanted more popular candidates.[13]

On 11 June 2009, the Bangladesh Awami League government dropped police 62 legal cases against Awami League politicians including 4 against him.[14] He returned to Barisal in October 2009, his first visit to Barisal since 1 October 2001. He was received in the city with over a hundred arches and was welcomed by then mayor of Barisal Shawkat Hossain Hiron.[15] On 23 July 2011, rival factions of Bangladesh Sramik League and Bangladesh Swechchasebak League backed by him and Hiron fought in Barisal, injuring 10 people.[16] In 2013, after Bangladesh Awami League candidate Shawkat Hossain Hiron lost the Barisal Mayoral Election, he blamed Abdullah for the loss. Hiron announced he would retire from politics.[17] On 24 March 2014, he was accused of facilitating the victory of Golam Mortuja Khan in the Upazlia Chairman election through vote rigging.[18] Abdullah responded by calling Hiron mentally imbalanced.[19] Abdullah was elected to Parliament from Barisal-1 in 2014.[3] On 18 January 2018, he was made the convener of the National Committee on Chittagong Hill Tracts with the rank of a government minister.[6]

Personal life

Abdullah father is former Awami league leader and water resource minister Abdur Rab Serniabat, who was killed in the assassination of Sheikh Mujib.[20] His mother and siblings were also killed in the coup.[21] His son, Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah, was elected Mayor of Barisal on 30 July 2018.[22] He is a cousin of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and central member of Awami league.[23]
