Sultan Abdul Jamil Shah I ibni Almarhum Sultan Muhammad Shah (died 1512) is the third Sultan of Pahang who reigned from 1495 to 1512. He reigned jointly with his young cousin, Mansur Shah I who succeeded on the abdication of his father, Ahmad Shah I in 1495.[1]

Early life

Known as Raja Jamil before his accession, he is the eldest son of the first Sultan of Pahang, Muhammad Shah by his wife, Mengindra Putri.[2] Following the abdication of his uncle, Ahmad Shah I and the proclamation of his cousin Raja Mansur as the new Sultan in 1495, Raja Jamil took responsibility for guardianship of the young Sultan.[3] He was subsequently appointed by another cousin, Mahmud Shah of Melaka as Sultan of Pahang and reigned jointly with Mansur Shah.[1]

Reign

Abdul Jamil Shah oversaw restoration of ties between Pahang and Melaka and in 1500, the two states cooperated to defeat the Raja of Ligor who had been instructed by Siam to attack Pahang. It was Siam's last attempt at invading Pahang.[1] In 1511, Melaka fell to the Portuguese Empire. Mahmud Shah fled to Muar in Johor and then on to Pahang where he was cordially received by Abdul Jamil Shah.[4] Abdul Jamil Shah died at Pekan a year later and was buried at Ziarat Raja Raden, and thus is styled Marhum Ziarat.[2]
