The A1 (Portuguese: Auto-estrada do Norte) is one of the principal motorways in Portugal. It connects Lisbon, the capital, to Porto, the country's second-largest city, and serves other important cities like Santarém, Leiria, Coimbra and Aveiro. A1 is operated by Brisa - Auto-estradas de Portugal, S.A.
The A1 is also the European E01 route for the whole of its length. In the section from Aveiro Norte to Lisbon, the E01 follows the same route as the E80. In that section the E80 signage prevails over the E01 signage, the latter rarely appearing.
Construction on A1 began in 1961 and was completed in 1991. It extends 303 km, comprising 26 interchanges, 7 service areas and 2 leisure rest areas (Fátima and Oiã).
