87th Rifle Division (Soviet Union)

The 87th Rifle Division was an infantry division of the Red Army, active before, during the Second World War and afterwards.

It formed in the first half of 1936 in the Kiev Military District as the personnel division for the defense in the Korosten Fortified Area (Cowra) with the subordination of its divisions. It was based in the Belokorovichi area.

In September 1939, it took part in the accession of Western Ukraine and as of 17 September and 2 October 1939 was part of the 15th Rifle Corps of the 5th Army Ukrainian Front. September 19th Division near Kostopil entered into battle with the enemy forces of up to two infantry regiments.

Second and Third Formations

The division was formed a second and third time.

On 1 January 1946 the 87th Rifle Division was part of the 10th Rifle Corps and stationed at Izhevsk, Udmurtskaya ASSR.[1] It was reduced to become the 12th Independent Rifle Brigade in April 1946, and the 12th Brigade was disbanded in March 1947.
