Pete Sampras was the defending champion in the men's singles tournament at the 1991 US Open, but lost in the quarterfinals to Jim Courier. Stefan Edberg defeated Courier 6–2, 6–4, 6–0 in the final to win the title

• Top seed and 1989 champion Boris Becker was eliminated in the third round by Paul Haarhuis.
• Perennial favorite Andre Agassi was eliminated in the first round by Aaron Krickstein.
• Five-time champion Jimmy Connors, who turned 39 during the tournament, entered the tournament as a wildcard and made it to the semifinals before losing to eventual runner-up Jim Courier.
