Fotosynthese is een proces waarbij lichtenergie wordt omgezet in chemische energie. Deze chemische energie wordt uiteindelijk gebruikt voor de vorming van voedingsstoffen zoals glucose. Het is een proces dat plaats vindt in alle levensvormen die beschikken over fotosynthesepigmenten (bv. chlorofyl) zoals planten, sommige bacteriën en wieren. De globale reactie: 6 CO2 + 6 H2O = C6H12O6 + 6 O2 waarbij CO2 koolstofdioxide betekent, H2O water, C6H12O6 glucose betekent en O2 zuurstof.
