< Structural Biochemistry < Membrane Proteins < Passive Transport

when moleculs must enter the cell the ion pass through specific channels in the hydrophobic barrier formed by membrane protein. we call that passive because the energy driving the ions movement origiantes from ion gradient itself. for example: enzyme display substrate specificty in that they facilitate the transport of some ions, but not others, even closely related ions.
