Created by Ernest Burgess, the concentric zone model was the first model of the North American city. It divides the city into five different zones: The CBD, followed by a zone of transition which was characterized by light manufacturing and businesses, then blue-collar residences, middle-class residencies, and finally, the commuter zone.
