< History of Rail Transport

The Invention of the Steam Engine The invention of the steam engine took place in 1825. The first steam engine was the "Penny Darren" built at Coalbrookdale, although George Stephenson created the first recognised locomotive and named it "Rocket". The development of "Rocket" led to the recognition of the potential of railways and to the development of further steam engines, heralding the age of railway transport.
