THE ROLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

It is the Holy Spirit which convicts of sin, empowers, draws men to God, inspires our prayers and intercedes for us (through us), and breaks the yoke of oppression to give spiritual liberty (2 Corinthians 3:17). He also works to produce the fruits of righteousness in those who have received salvation - i.e. "love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith and meekness." Galatians 5:21-22; 2 Corinthians 3:3

The holy Spirit can be: quenched (1Thessalonians 5:19) by neglect, inattentiveness or a lack of devotion

It can also be stirred up (2Timothy 1:6) by praying in the Spirit

And it can be renewed (2Cor. 4:16) by a fresh infilling.

INTERCHANGE OF TERMINOLOGY - BUT ONE SPIRIT

“There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling.” Ephesians 4:4. “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body.” I Corinthians 12:13. “There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling.” Ephesians 4:4. “For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.” Ephesians 2:18.

It was the holy Spirit that came upon Yeshua at His baptism, but it is also called the Spirit of God. “And the holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him,” Luke 3:22 “ and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him." Matthew 3:16 'the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove” Mark 1:10; John 1:32

The holy Spirit is also referred to as the Spirit of God in believers: “if the Spirit of Him who raised up Jesus dwells in you” Romans 8:11

“ the Spirit of God dwell in you.” Romans 8:9; 1 Cor.3:16; Matt.3:16

“the Spirit of the living God” 2 Corinthians 3:3

“no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.” 1 Corinthians 2:11

“It is the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you” Matt.10;20; 1 Cor.2:11

“Spirit of YHWH” Luke 4:18

The holy Spirit is identified as the Spirit of the Father (Matt.10:20) ‭which can be sent by either the Father or the Son. (John 14:15, 25-26) The Father was in Yeshua through the Holy Spirit, and so, the fullness of the godhead dwelt in him . The Holy Spirit is most what makes Yeshua, the son of God and the Father one.

It is also called the Spirit of Christ because Yeshua was born of the Holy Spirit. Therefore His own spirit was imparted from the Holy Spirit. “the Spirit of Christ” Romans 8:9 “the Spirit of His Son” Galatians 4:6 “Spirit of Jesus Christ” Philippians1:19

“But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.” Romans 8:9 “The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” Romans 8:16 In this context the ”spirit of Christ” is the life of Christ - His nature.

The ‘world‘ - i.e. the unsaved, cannot receive the holy Spirit - John 14:17 An unbeliever has to come to faith in Yeshua first before they can receive the holy Spirit. Note the example of Cornelius in Acts 10. The evidence that they believed in their hearts and were purified by faith was in the fact that the holy Spirit fell upon them - Acts 15:9

VARIOUS OPERATIONS AND GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT

“Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord” (1 Corinthians 12:4-5)

There are different measures of the Spirit that a believer can have also. (Philippians 1:19)

Prior to Christ’s coming, the holy Spirit came upon men to inspire and/or anoint them (Judges 3:10: 6:34; 1 Peter 1:11; 2 Timothy 3:16). In John 14:17 Yeshua said how the Holy Spirit was WITH the disciples but that He would be IN them after His resurrection. That was fulfilled in John 20:22 when Yeshua came to them and breathed upon them and they received the initial measure of the Spirit.

He said that He would send the Holy Spirit from the Father and instructed them to wait in prayer until they received that outpouring of the Spirit that came on the day of Pentecost (Acts 1:4-5; 2:4) which was another measure of the Holy Spirit which baptised them into His spiritual Body and empowered them for ministry.

MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

YESHUA PRAYS FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT TO BE SENT AND THE FATHER DOES IT IN HIS NAME

“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, even the Spirit of truth, that He may abide with you forever." (John 14:16)

”But the Helper, the holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, ” (John 14:26)

THE HOLY SPIRIT TAKES YESHUA’S PLACE AND ABIDES IN BELIEVERS

“It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart I will send him to you.” (John 16:7-8)

“And He will give you another Helper,...., that He may abide with you forever." (John 14:16) He continues Yeshua’s ministry of Counsellor, Advocate, Intercessor etc..

“But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, He will testify of Me.” John 15:26 He brings the reality of Yeshua into the believers life.

FELLOWSHIP WITH THE FATHER & THE SON THROUGH THE SPIRIT

“If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” (John 14:23)

“At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.” (John 14:20)

REVEALS THE MIND & WILL OF GOD

“For what man knows the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knows no man, but the Spirit of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:11)

“But when the Helper is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceeds from the Father, he shall bear witness of me:” (John 15:26) (Proceed means to go out of or exit from the father.)

“However, when he the Spirit of truth has come, he will guide you into all truth; for he will not speak on his own authority; but whatever he hears he will speak; ... (progressive revelation of truth) and he will tell you things to come. He will glorify me, ... (prophetic revelations) for he will take of what is mine and declare it to you” (John 16:13-15) ... (prophetic words of edification)

“He will teach you all things, and bring to remembrance all things that I said to you.” (John 14:26 (teaching and quickening of the Word)

CONVICTS OF SIN, RIGHTEOUSNESS AND JUDGMENT

“He will convict the world of sin” ... “because they do not believe in Me” “ ... and of righteousness” ... “because I go to My Father and you see Me no more” “ ... and of judgement“ ... “because the ruler of this world is judged“ (John 16:8-10)”

In making the Presence of Yeshua real, men are convicted of their unbelief and of the unrighteous condition of their soul which will incur the judgement of God if they remain in the kingdom of darkness, under the dominion of the god of this world.

In every respect, the holy Spirit continues the ministry of Yeshua and glorifies Him.
