Chapter 55

On April 6, 1986, Evelyn visits Mrs. Threadgoode. She tells Evelyn that Vesta Adcock has gone crazy. She came in the room, grabbed Mrs. Otis's ceramic slipper and threw it out the window. Mrs. Otis is upset, but a nurse tells her Mrs. Adcock has been doing that to everyone lately. Ninny tells Evelyn she is glad her mind is strong.

Analysis

The theme of aging is seen in this chapter. The difference in how Mrs. Threadgoode and Mrs. Adcock have aged is seen. While the behavior of Mrs. Adcock may seem silly, it shows what can happen when the mind deteriorates with age. Mrs. Adcock is much wealthier than Mrs. Threadgoode, but the loss of her mental capacity makes her much poorer than Ninny.
