Theology Proper

The doctrine of God

God's moral character is just, righteous, merciful, and loving.

Job wrote in Job 36:6 "He does not keep the wicked alive, but gives justice to the afflicted." (New American Standard Bible - NASB) So that verse states God gives justice and provides an example.

John wrote in 1 John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (NASB) That verse states God is both faithful and righteous and then provides an example, that if we meet the condition of confessing our sins, he will forgive our sins and remove all our unrighteousness.

Paul wrote in Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (NASB) So that verse states the deserved punishment for sin is death. When people are caught breaking a law and face a judge, they may want that judge to remove their offense from their record by taking a defensive driving class, doing community service, or simply living a few years of good, crime-free behavior. Similarly, the second half of this verse says God is merciful in providing a way to avoid the effects of our sin through Christ Jesus.

John wrote in John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life." (NASB) That verse again mentions the eternal life free of the punishment of death with an expanded explanation as to why and how. That verse begins by explaining why is that God is loving of the whole world. Then what follows is the how, which is to believe in God's only begotten Son, Jesus.
